PetLynx Announces New HomeSafe Initiative

At the April 2010 Canadian Regional Summits for Urban Animal Strategies an exciting new initiative to make pet insurance protection available to the pet families of the 14 million+ dogs and cats in Canada was announced.

Under this new initiative, called HomeSafe™, Western Financial Insurance Company (WFIC) and PetLynx Corporation will develop health insurance benefits for the new on-line HomeSafe™ portal.

How does it work?
HomeSafe™ will provide a range of products and prices from three of the leading pet insurance brands in Canada, all of which are underwritten by WFIC. Pet families may choose the type of medical insurance that best meets their budget and their needs from among these offerings. This coverage will  be registered in the pet's record on the HomeSafe™ national system, which is powered by PetLynx. In an emergency situation, pets registered with HomeSafe™ will have the shortest path to medical attention in Canada.

Who will benefit from the HomeSafe™ program?
Everyone! Using the on-line HomeSafe™ portal, pet families will manage their  animals' care profiles, breed information, recovery services, pet pictures and licensing information. Pet retailers, breeders, humane societies, municipalities, veterinarians and other service providers will have the ability to ensure that the pets they place or provide services to have medical benefits.

Why is a program like HomeSafe™ needed?
The Urban Animal Surveys, conducted for PetLynx Corporation by Ipsos Reid in 2008 and dmrkynetec in 2009, clearly showed that companion animal health and wellness is a top priority for pet families.

Companion animal industry intelligence tells us that:
  • There are higher instances of surrender and euthanasia in communities where health care benefits aren't readily available for companion animals.
  • To reduce or eliminate this situation communities and industry need to work together.
What industry sectors can be involved with HomeSafe™?
  • Municipalities
  • Humane societies
  • Veterinarians
  • Breeders
  • Retailers
  • All other service providers.
Why Western Financial and PetLynx?
Because this program delivers a win for communities, pets, people and the companion animal industry in Canada.

"We believe that HomeSafe is the most comprehensive approach to improving health and wellness for companion animals in Canada," said Randy Valpy, President and CEO of Western Financial Insurance. "We have already paid out more than $110,000,000 in claims, which means Canadians can trust us. Now with PetLynx and the HomeSafe™ program we will take health and wellness to a new level."

"Health care is one of the highest priorities Canadians have," adds Larry R. Evans, President and CEO of PetLynx Corporation. "Our colleagues across Canada helped us become the largest automated recovery system in just three years. Together with Western Financial Insurance we will deliver a new level of health and wellness for pets and help Canadian communities become the best place for companion animals in the world."

Pet Obsessed: The cost of cute

Whether you’re a dog or a cat person, there’s no question that our four-legged friends provide us with the kind of companionship you just can’t put a price on. That didn’t stop the folks at USA-based www.mint.com from doing just that however.

The company's latest info-graphic takes a look at the true cost of sharing your home with companion animals, along with the requisite cute photos. How much do Americans spend on pet food, supplies, and pet food? And how have the big pet supply retailers done during the economic downturn?

This info-graphic is based on the aggregate data from over one million Mint.com users, a representative sampling of US consumers, along with data from wiki.answers.com.

The blog posts to this information are interesting, too. Tell us what you think of mint.com's statistics.

PetLynx Hits New Marks for Jan/Feb 2010

During the first 59 days of 2010, PetLynx registered 6,876 new entities of which 3,193 were pets and 3,683 were associates. At the end of February, the PetLynx Automated Recovery System stood at 319,868 registered entities of which 147,695 were pets and 172,173 were associates.

The business plan anticipated a 'many-to-one' ratio of 'associates' to 'animals' when designing the PetLynx model. At the end of February there were 16.5% more associates than animals registered in the PetLynx utility. Since associates are directly related to transactions, either as pet families paying for services or as industry stakeholders providing services, management sees the ability to grow future revenues as being directly related to the number of associates registered in the PetLynx utility.

In July of 2009 the PetLynx V1 rate rose to 94% for the first time. At the end of February, PetLynx had automatically assisted 147,696 recovery episodes and for the first time in history achieved a V1 recovery rate of 100%. The V1 recovery rate is calculated as the cumulative number of recovery episodes divided by the cumulative number of animals registered on the system at the same moment in time.

With the highest V1 rate in the world, PetLynx demonstrates the unique advantage its registration model has. PetLynx animals are registered for their entire lifetime with no additional cost unlike other services where the information chain breaks when fees to change records are refused.

These encouraging metrics provide evidence that PetLynx is the most effective and successful recovery service in the world today.

Small Dogs Are a BIG Market

North American Urban Animal Survey Highlight

One of the purposes of the 2008 North American Urban Animal Survey (NAUAS) was to determine the size of the companion animal industry in Canada. The study indicated that there are more than 4.8 million households with cats and 4.4 million households with dogs.

The 2009 North American Urban Animal Survey (NAUAS), delved deeper into understanding how pet-owners feel about their animal companions and what factors drive their decisions to provide various levels of care – or not. It identified four distinct types – or segments – of dog owners and three types of cat owners.

The results of this research are intriguing! It revealed, for example, that “Dog Pleasers” – those who share the deepest bond with their dogs but are only “fairly responsible” dog owners – seem to favour dogs under 20-pounds. While this segment represented only 21% of the total dog-owning population, almost half of them owned little dogs…. And a significant number of these little dogs were over the age of five.

How can this information help my organization?

This type of data can assist you in planning and implementing targeted and effective humane education and responsible pet ownership messages, as well as market specific products and services to pet owners. Targeted marketing is more effective than taking a "shotgun approach." Time invested in sound research saves money in the long term!

2009 North American Urban Animal Survey (NAUAS)

You have questions. We will have answers!
  • Does the average pet guardian think a spayed or neutered pet makes a better behaved pet?
  • Do they think that mandatory pet licensing is just a "cash grab" for their city?
  • If a pet guardian gets a prescription for their pet, how many follow through with proper administration of the drug?
  • When buying pet food, is price the deciding factor?
  • How has the economy impacted attitudes about pet care?
These and dozens of other important questions will be addressed in the 2009 North American Urban Animal Survey (NAUAS) being conducted in September. The results will be presented at the National Summit for Urban Animal Strategies to be held at the Chateau Lake Louise, Alberta, in mid-October.

The Responsible Pet Owner Segmentation Survey is the third of its kind to be conducted by Calgary-based PetLynx Corporation on behalf of its many industry partners.

"The cumulative answers to these questions will enable us to better understand 'the big picture' of important issues affecting pet guardians and the pet care industry in North America," explains David Webb, research consultant with dmrkynetec, the leading global supplier of market research to the agriculture, animal health and nutrition industries. "When we have a better concept of 'the big picture' we can develop broad-based strategies to address the big problems."

Webb adds that the methodology used in this "segmentation analysis" will divide the overall cat- and dog-owning population to four or five basic typologies. This will help us better understand their underlying motivations and beliefs with regard to pet care. With this information, we can be better equipped to deliver targeted and powerful responsible pet ownership messages.

"In the past, the companion animal industry as a whole has been forced to make important financial and legislative decisions based on common beliefs and internal statistics, not sound research," adds Petlynx Corporation's President, Larry Evans. "Big industry players, like pet food manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies, may have been in a position to fund their own research. But those of us at the front lines... the animal control centres, shelters, small retailers and veterinarians have been limited to our own internal data resources, which may not tell the whole story."

"Because this research is being conducted on a collaborative basis across Canada and the United States," concludes Webb, "it is a cost-efficient and affordable means of providing all facets of the pet industry -- from large corporations, to municipalities, to small service providers -- with a wealth of information that would otherwise be totally out of reach for them."

Mark Labelle Entertainer for Summit Gala

Mark Labelle aka Mr. Music, the comic entertainer with the keyboard, is back for the National Summit Awards Gala in Lake Louise on Thursday, 15 October 2009.

We first saw Mark at Agribition as he entertained the crowd at one of Canada's largest agriculture shows in Regina. When the opportunity came to use Labelle for the 2007 Summit Awards Gala there was absolutely no hesitation. We weren't disappointed. Labelle received rave reviews from his performance and a few new bookings from delegates in the audience. Mark's ability to engage the audience and to integrate music with comedy ended the 2007 celebration event on a high note.

Those attending the 2009 Summits Gala will have an opportunity to enjoy a high energy show to which Fairmont has now added a room and continental breakfast option. Those travelling up just for the Gala who are not delegates can bring a companion to the Thursday evening Gala and spend a relaxing Friday morning at one of the nicest resorts in the Rockies.

'I know of no other entertainer who has made me laugh, touched my heart and lifted my soul in the same performance', said Larry Evans, Chair, Organizing Committee for SUAS, 'We are so pleased to have Mark back in 2009. With his background in entertainment, film and now broadcast, Mark Labelle is worth spending time with.'

In addition to celebrating the achievement of your peers from the industry, we promise a really enjoyable evening full of fun, laughter and good fellowship. Register for the Summit Gala here

Regina Summit Attracts Prairie Leaders

The sunny, warm weather of Regina in June favoured those attending the second annual Prairie Regional Summit for Urban Animal Strategies. Hotel Saskatchewan is a heritage site in this provincial capital and its central location provided easy access for those attending the event on Monday, 15 June 2009. This was the first Regional Summit to be staged in the late afternoon/early evening and the change seemed to work for those who needed the extra travel time.

Delegates from Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Regina and several smaller centres across the Canadian prairies represented the animal welfare, animal control & enforcement, animal health & wellness and animal service sectors of the industry. The Prairie Summit was planned and delivered in collaboration with the Regina Humane Society. The event was co-sponsored by Procter & Gamble Total Petcare, Securican General Insurance and PetLynx Corporation.

The presentation of the 2008 Urban Animal Survey on the business of urban animals stimulated a great deal of discussion. Among the items collected during Session One were the following:
* Evidence shows we need to identify and alter animals prior to their first homing event
* Reproducing spay/neuter report showing gender would be interesting
* Tracking call centre and online assist events separately would be interesting
* Another important source of pets are the 'used.com' sites

Session Two provided a stimulating discussion of cats and a feline friendly community. It was obvious to these delegates that we need a more collaborative and integrated approach to messaging in our communities. It was noted that cats are perfect reproduction machines that have a tremendous ability to adapt to environment and conditions. The media may also be responsible for attitudes towards cats since cats are often presented in a negative way while dogs are presented more postively. Collecting feral data may be problematic when the general public has so little understanding of the feral cat or the feral cat environment.

One of the most interesting discussions was in the area of how to increase the value of cats in the community. Several useful ideas came forward in the area of 'working cats': rodent control in businesses, office cats and cats in social programs like seniors, special needs, prisons, remand centres and juvenile offenders.

The discussion as to why cats lack value in our communities focussed on education and awareness but in the end delegates suggested that the fact that it is socially acceptable to under-value cats just like it used to be socially acceptable to drink and drive is very telling. Finally the ability cats have to reproduce in large numbers also contributes to lower values because the supply outstrips demand.

Louise Yates, President of Regina Humane Society moderated the 2009 Prairie Regional Summit with a very capable and confident approach. She also introduced the 'table scramble' to ensure that delegates moved to other tables before dinner and made themselves acquainted with other industry colleagues. It is always gratifying to see these new relationships being formed and supported across the geography and sectors of the industry.

It was great to see old friends like Linda Gubbe of SCAT in Saskatoon and to make new friends like Francis Wach of Saskatchewan SPCA, Karen Harasen of the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Assocation and Pat Vogt, President of People for Animals of Saskatchewan who brought input from their groups.

A decision on how to alternate the Prairie Region Summit between centres was not made, however, it was suggested that the Summit be moved between Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba on a three year rotation. The next Prairie Regional Summit is set for the week of 19 April 2010.
